Can a good film change the world? At Youth SEED, we believe the answer is yes, especially films that are made by youth. On November 15, Simphony Productions presented 2 films at Compathos' Relevate Film Festival at the New Parkway theater in Oakland and participated in a panel discussion with Youth SEED and United Roots. 'The Voyage,' directed by Gabriella Huerta, depicts the journey of one family from Mexico to the U.S. and the hardships they faced along the way. 'Under the Gun,' directed by Demario Williams from Youth Uprising, depicts the filmmakers' experience of being shot while making his own film addressing gun violence in Oakland. Luis Montoya of Simphony Productions was director of photography for both films. 'Come to the Table' directed by Zoe Salnave, chronicles the growth of the edible schoolyard program in Berkeley. Following the screenings, the youth participated in a panel discussion, which highlighted the value of young people having access to the opportunities and resources to tell their own stories and inspire social change. Stay tuned for more movie screenings in the months ahead!
